Election Periods

Wondering when you can sign up for Medicare? When you can change your coverage? Here’s your cheat sheet.

ICEP (Initial Coverage Election Period):

This is when you can sign up for Medicare Parts B, C, and D. It starts 3 months before your birth month and ends 3 months after your birth month.

AEP (Annual Election Period):

This is when you can make changes to current Advantage Plans and Prescription Drug Plans. No matter when you initially enrolled, the AEP is October 15 through December 7 each year.

AOEP (Advantage Open Enrollment Period):

This is when you can make a one-time change to an Advantage Plan (if you have one). This period is only January 1-31 each year.

SEP (Special Election Period):

If you have a “qualifying event,” such as retirement, that allows changes to be made immediately, you have this short period in which to make those changes.
